Reno's First Black Church
Bethel AME Church was Reno's first black church, founded in 1907. The original church was a small wooden building that was enlarged and remodeled into its current configuration in 1941. Bethel AME Church was famous for its weekly chicken dinners prepared by the Women's Missionary Society. The dinners were a fundraiser for the church and popular among Reno's white population.
